May First Friday – May 6, 2011

Please join us for our next First Friday event! Explore the arts throughout Greencastle starting at 5pm.

The Low Road Gallery is featuring an exhibition called “Time”. Guest curated by Indianapolis-native Ben Valentine, Time is a collection of video art from New York City and around the country. The videos are selected based on their alternative exploration of process and the element of time. As with all of our openings, there will be refreshments and a talk by the curator at 7:30pm. The featured artists are Jason Irla, Heather Donahue, Oscar Santillan, Caleb Larsen, Evan Livingston, and Dick Whyte.

The Putnam County Library will feature Barbara Timm: Encaustic Art Exhibit. Barbara Timm recently received a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission to develop a series of encaustic paintings. Encaustic means “burning in” and the technique involves painting pigmented beeswax onto a hard, porous surface such as wood and fusing each layer with a heat gun or torch. The encaustic paintings of Jasper Johns in the 50s and 60s have inspired a revival of this ancient medium, first used in Greco-Roman Egypt to paint mummy portraits.
